Setting a Farmhouse Table for Autumn

A road lined with trees in yellow autumn leaves

The best autumn tables are not styled. They look like somebody sat down and cooked something good. Still, a few considered things make a table feel like an occasion, and none of them needs to match.

Start with linen

A linen cloth is the quiet foundation. It softens with every wash and does not mind a spilled glass of wine. A stripe, like our Jemima linen tablecloth, gives the table structure without competing with the food.

Bring in timber

Serve from boards rather than plates where you can. A round wooden board with bread and cheese in the middle of the table invites people to reach and share. See our kitchen and dining collection.

Candles, and brass to hold them

Low light is half of it. Use candles of different heights, and put them in something with weight. Brass such as the Eclipse candle holder ages beautifully and looks better for every year that passes.

Greenery from the garden

A jug of whatever is in the hedgerow or garden. Late dahlias, rosehips, a few branches of berries. It should look found, not bought.

Leave room

The mistake is overfilling. Leave space for plates, elbows and conversation, and let the food be the centrepiece.
