A country year runs on small, regular jobs. Here is a gentle guide to what the seasons ask of the house, the table and the garden.
Autumn
Light the fire for the first time. Bring out the wool throws and the heavier curtains. Wash the boots, re-proof the waxed jacket and put the socks where you can find them. Cook slowly: roots, apples, stews. See The Autumn Edit.
Winter
Candles at supper, tea by the pot, a hamper on the kitchen table. Keep a basket of logs by the hearth and a dog bed by the stove. Plan a few long walks for the bright, cold days. See The Christmas Edit and Lighting.
Spring
Open the windows. Put the winter blankets away and bring out linen. Sow seeds on the windowsill, clean the bird feeders and wrap the pots in wool to keep off the slugs. See Garden & Outdoors.
Summer
Eat outside. Lay the table in the garden, carry out the cheese board and leave the doors open until dark. See Kitchen & Dining.
